My thoughts on Biden.

Kinja'd!!!

I think he’s gonna be this century’s Carter... And that’s kinda fine. My biggest takeaway from the Trump presidency (whether it be extended or not) is that ultimately the leader of a nation doesn’t have to be a technocrat. As much as I despise many of the things he did; the US government didn’t collapse, and his advisors (even with the very high profile screw ups) maybe didn’t do permanent damage to the american bureaucracy.

Which should be a demonstration that young, perhaps not experienced politicans, shouldn’t be scared to reach for the presidency. Within or outside the party system. In American governance there exists a multitude of experts that can adequately help a leader (who must govern as a representative, direct or indirect, for the country) implement policy and “rule” over the third most populated country on earth.

The wishes of Americans are human wishes, and anyone can capture them, no matter their background.

In the end. Americans need to choose what they want their representatives to be. For me, Trump is not a good leader. As much as his brash strategies might seem compelling, I don’t think one can celebrate him as an effective leader. Biden might seem like a timid, more mature leader willing to look right past both parties’ wishes for polarization. But I think that ultimately the value of Biden is that maybe he’ll make everyone moderately angry at government. As opposed to making more than half of the country piffing ma d and the other side smugly prideful .

Also, this is fucking unfair. If any other country had such a stupid political problem, and the potential for a contested election, their currency would depreciate significantly.

But the doll ar is the doll ar.

Oh, once they fully grasp the insane elements  of his tax plan? Yeah, nobody’s going to be happy.

I think lots of people are more angry at extreme inequality  than at stagnant incomes.

Yeah I really would love massive deprecation. Although, not being able to cross the border would hamper my enjoyment of it

Top earners used to pay 90%. I think we’ll survive if they have to pay more than Trump’s $750.

Please, tax me more. I have a friend who I’m effectively supporting 50-75% of their income because we have no safety net worthy of the name. I wouldn’t mind spreading that burden around, but even before that I would have been fine with paying more.

I think you are greatly underestimating the damage he’s done.

And which insane elements would those be?

What’s insane is is slashing taxes on the wealthy and corporations (note that those cuts were permanent, while the middle class cuts expire after 10 years ) at a time when income inequality is the worst it’s been during the Gilded Age. And the promised economic benefits never materialized (for all the talk of Trump’s pre-covid economy , it wa s growing at basically the exact same rate Obama’s had been, and vastly slower than what Trump had promised).

You focus on a weird soundbite, while ignoring the elements that completely break 100 years of tax planning

On the sound bite
1) that “$750" number ignores how NOLs work.
2) the guy’s actually not drawing any salary for the current job, so yeah, his tax on earned income is probably pretty low. You never see CNN coverage on the fact that he’s not drawing the $1.6 MILLION in compensation he’s entitled to, do you?  Somehow that’s never mentioned.

On the substance of my comment-
The proposals around 1031 exchanges, Gift-Estate Tax harmonization and capital gains step-up pretty much invalidate 100 years of tax precedents.  It’s a real shitshow of progressive ideas from people who’ve apparently never had a job in the real world.  And almost certainly don’t understand how taxes actually work.

There’s income inequality, but anybody that thinks Biden’s tax plan “fixes” that is delusional.

I’m sure whatever makes it through Congress will be completely broken in entirely different ways than his plan.

Elimination of the 1031 exchanges invalidates 100 years of precedent— and the fact that 1031 allows trillions of capital to remain in the market, as working capital, can’t be understated. Anybody working in commercial property is freaked out by this... That single act shows how short sighted (and, frankly, ignorant) his economic advisors are.

Elimination of basis step-up, fucks 10s of millions of estate plans in the country. And probably stimulates a massive capital flight.

The strange sound bite on “corporate tax rates” shows a deep ignorance of how personal-corporate rates have to harmonize in a global economy. Going back to the “old broken system” where multi-national conglomerates park their profits in an Irish tax haven, with the money parked in an Isle of Man bank... like Apple did for years until it was fixed in 2017... is a real step backwards.

I realize people are angry, but that doesn’t excuse doing self-defeating crap like is in this “plan”.

I don’t want the US economy to implode, a big part of Mexico’s “good” Q3 performance was because of the secondary sector and it’s links to the US service sector. So we need them to be good for us to be good. I just think that for other countries (countries who can only buy foreign debt, for instance) the fact that America can get away with this sort of bullshit must feel injust.

We’re going to find out Tuesday.  I think we’ll see that people are more motivated by personal growth-and-prosperity.

I find it totally bizarre that instead of cracking down on tax avoidance you prefer a race to the bottom.

As for 1031 exchanges , I don’t think that beneficiaries of a capital gains tax dodge freaking out about their capital gains dodge being eliminated is a good reason to decide it’s a bad idea.

I think maybe we’re all thinking too far into the future. Never forget how far ahea d in the polls Hillary was in 2016. Unless this is an absolute blowout, which is highly unlikely, the following weeks after the election are going to be nasty. It will essentially be a culmination of all the tension that has been building since the beginning of 2020. Like water receding from the shoreline before a tsunami. Blame tossing, conspiracy theories , contesting the election , and possibly (very likely) violence.

Overall Trump is a terrible leader, my own opinion, take it for what it’s worth. But he’s done a hell of a job uniting HIS base. Very few of his base voters give a crap about the racial bating and insults hurled every which way. We need to all just take a step back, protect our lov ed ones, and hope for the best outcome at this stage in the rally.

Inequality is never going to be resolved with adjusting tax rates. What really needs to be done is ending share holder rights, more protective tariffs, and significantly less immigration (particularly H1Bs)

Edit: and apply anti-trust law vigorously (Wal-mart, amazon, google, etc)

I’d love to see younger people in the oval office, the problem is that is ludicrously expensive to do so, and if nobody really knows who you are, nobody will help sponsor you. That’s why old farts tend to take center stage, because they have the savings, the reputation, and the experience.

Also, the legal age to become president is 35, so even if I wanted to change the world, I’d have to wait 1 5 years/a minimum of 2 different presidents (that is if Biden wins this election and next, as does the person after him) .

From an international point of view the US has become a laughing stock. Even more so than during W’s second therm. And then you have the state of the US democracy. And... It’s just too much to mention.

No leader can let a country implode in just 4 years. Not even Trump. He seems to be trying though.
